Brief Bible Dive: Summer in the Psalms – Psalm 73—שָׁלוֹם / shalom
This Brief Bible Dive is part of our summer worship series where we focus on the Book of Psalms. The goal of these videos is to give you a stronger knowledge of one Hebrew word and how it adds to the reading of the psalm.
Pronounced: sha-LOHM
Often translated: peace
Better heard as: wholeness, completeness, well-being, soundness, welfare, life as God intends
Root idea: Shalom is connected to wholeness and completeness. It is not only the absence of conflict, but the presence of restored relationship, well-being, and life rightly ordered before God.
Psalm 73 says:
“For I was envious of the arrogant;
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”
The word translated “prosperity” is connected to shalom. That may surprise us because shalom is usually translated “peace.”
In Psalm 73, the psalmist sees the shalom of the wicked. They appear whole, secure, comfortable, and undisturbed. From the outside, their lives look settled. They seem to have the kind of ease and well-being everyone wants.
But the psalm asks whether that apparent shalom is real.
The wicked may look secure, but the sanctuary reveals that their footing is unstable. Their prosperity is not the deep wholeness God gives. It is surface peace without faithful rootedness.
Why This Enriches the Psalm
Hearing shalom helps us understand the spiritual crisis of Psalm 73.
The psalmist is not only jealous because bad people have nice things. He is disturbed because the wicked appear to have shalom. They appear to have the well-being, security, and fullness that the faithful expected from life with God.
That makes the psalm’s struggle deeper. It asks:
What is real peace?
What is true well-being?
Can a life look whole and still be spiritually unstable?
Can a person suffer and still be held in the deeper shalom of God?
Numbers 6 helps us hear the answer. In the priestly blessing, peace is not merely the appearance of ease. Peace is given under the shining face and gracious attention of the LORD.
In Psalm 73, the psalmist learns that true shalom is not found by envying the wicked. It is found by being near God.
