Brief Bible Dive: Summer in the Psalms – Psalm 133—טוֹב / tov
This Brief Bible Dive is part of our summer worship series where we focus on the Book of Psalms. The goal of these videos is to give you a stronger knowledge of one Hebrew word and how it adds to the reading of the psalm.
Pronounced: TOHV
Often translated: good
Better heard as: good, beautiful, beneficial, fitting, pleasing, life-giving, as God intends
Root idea: Tov describes goodness that is not merely moral correctness. It can include beauty, usefulness, delight, well-being, fittingness, and life as it is meant to be.
Psalm 133 begins:
“How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity!”
The Hebrew word translated “good” is tov.
Many people have heard this word before, even if they do not realize it. In English, we hear it in phrases such as “mazel tov,” which means something like “good fortune” or “congratulations.” We may also hear it in Hebrew greetings such as “boker tov,” meaning “good morning.”
In the Bible, tov is a rich word. In Genesis 1, God repeatedly sees creation and calls it good. That goodness means more than “not bad.” It means fitting, beautiful, pleasing, life-giving, and aligned with God’s intention.
Psalm 133 uses tov to describe kindred living together in unity. Unity is not merely efficient. It is not merely useful for keeping peace. It is tov. It is good in the deep sense. It is beautiful, fitting, and life-giving under God’s blessing.
Why This Enriches the Psalm
Hearing tov helps us understand the psalm’s joy.
Psalm 133 does not say that unity is merely practical. It says unity is good and pleasant. The shared life of God’s people is part of the goodness God desires for creation.
This connects Psalm 133 to the wider biblical story. In Genesis 1, God sees creation as good. In Genesis 2, God says it is not good for the human being to be alone. Human life is created for relationship, community, and communion.
Psalm 133 sings the goodness of that shared life when it is marked by unity, blessing, and life from the LORD.
Tov helps us hear unity not as pressure to agree on everything, but as the deep goodness of life together under God’s care.
