Brief Bible Dive: Summer in the Psalms – Psalm 23—חֶסֶד / chesed

This Brief Bible Dive is part of our summer worship series where we focus on the Book of Psalms. The goal of these videos is to give you a stronger knowledge of one Hebrew word and how it adds to the reading of the psalm.

Pronounced: KHEH-sed

Often translated: mercy, steadfast love, loving kindness

Better heard as: covenant loyalty, faithful love, tenacious mercy, loyal love that does not let go

Root idea: Chesed describes faithful, covenantal love expressed in action. It is love with commitment, mercy with staying power, and kindness rooted in relationship.

Psalm 23 ends:

     “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

     all the days of my life…”

The word translated “mercy” is chesed.

No single English word carries the full meaning. “Mercy” is good, but it can sound like pity from a distance. “Steadfast love” is also good, but it can sound abstract. “Lovingkindness” has a beautiful history, but it may sound old-fashioned. “Covenant loyalty” gives the theological depth, but it can sound formal.

Chesed holds these meanings together. It is God’s faithful love in action. It is mercy that stays. It is love rooted in covenant. It is kindness that keeps moving toward the beloved.

In Psalm 23, chesed does not sit still. It follows the psalmist. It pursues the life of the one who has walked through pasture, path, valley, and danger.

Why This Enriches the Psalm

Hearing chesed helps us understand the ending of Psalm 23 with fresh depth.

The psalm does not end with the sheep finding its own way home. It ends with God’s goodness and chesed following all the days of life.

This means the shepherd’s care is not temporary. God’s faithful love does not appear only in green pastures and disappear in the valley. It does not wait politely at a distance. It follows. It pursues. It accompanies.

Psalm 23 is not only about comfort. It is about the relentless faithfulness of God.

The life of faith is not sustained by our ability to cling perfectly to God. It is sustained by the God whose chesed follows us all the way home.
