Brief Bible Dive: Summer in the Psalms – Psalm 8 – אֱנוֹשׁ / enosh
This Brief Bible Dive is part of our summer worship series where we focus on the Book of Psalms. The goal of these videos is to give you a stronger knowledge of one Hebrew word and how it adds to the reading of the psalm.
Pronounced: eh-NOHSH
Often translated: human being, mortal
Better heard as: frail human being, mortal creature, dust-and-breath person
Root idea: Enosh often emphasizes human frailty, mortality, and creatureliness.
Psalm 8 asks:
“what are humans that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?”
The word behind “humans” is enosh. It is not a word that highlights human strength or achievement. It points toward human frailty and mortality.
Psalm 8 does not ask why God cares for the impressive, powerful, or self-sufficient. It asks why God cares for enosh: fragile, mortal human beings.
Why This Enriches the Psalm
Hearing enosh deepens the wonder of Psalm 8.
The psalm is not saying, “Human beings are so great that God must notice them.” It is saying, “Human beings are so small and fragile, yet God is mindful of them.”
This keeps dignity and humility together. We are not gods. We are not trash. We are enosh: fragile creatures held in the mindful care of God.
