Jesus challenges the Pharisees and Herodians by demanding they give the emperor what is his, while simultaneously reminding them of their ultimate duty to give God what is God’s. This encourages a faith that acknowledges earthly authority, yet risks confrontation by upholding allegiance to God above all else. Everything belongs to God, even the emperor’s authority, meaning true faith may require challenging human authority when it conflicts with God’s will.
