The season of Pentecost is the season that focuses on the Holy Spirit of God coming into our lives and shaping the world for the better through us. Beginning with the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit filled the fearful disciples with courageous fire to share the good news of Jesus, we will examine many ways that the Spirit affects and empowers our lives until this day.
Today’s story is about the Holy Spirit guiding someone to break barriers so that more people can receive the good news of Jesus and be part of the Church. Specifically, it tells of Philip encountering an Ethiopian eunuch who served the Candace, the Queen of Ethiopia. The Eunuch was reading from the prophet Isaiah, wanted to know God better, but because of 1 John 4:7-21, his physical situation would not have been allowed to participate fully in his religious community. Philip, however, shared the good news of Jesus with him and the eunuch was baptized, thus showing that Jesus’s good news and the Church are for everyone.
